Zone picking vs batch picking vs multi-order picking
Choosing the picking method that fits your order profile and warehouse layout.

The method should match the order mix, not a brochure.
Batch picking for small orders
Batch picking is for a pile of small orders. Group 10 to 20 shipments of the same shape (singles, then mixed singles, then multi-item, then priority). One walk, a consolidated pick list, and a tote grid: tote 3 gets two units from C-03. Print one batch at a time so slips do not mix. Run priority waves first, sorted by shipping method and location. Scan each unit into its tote. Skip the scan and tote 3 gets tote 4's two units. The consolidated list will not catch it. This is what most people mean by multi-order or cluster picking. There is no separate mode.
Yesterday you had 80 singles, 24 multi-item, and 6 Next-Day. Release the 6 as their own priority wave. Then four batches of 20 singles. Then two batches of 12 multi-item. Do not drop a Next-Day into a singles cart. Do not batch a 12-line wholesale order with DTC singles.
Zone picking for split warehouses
Zone picking is for a warehouse that is already split: freezer vs dry, brand A vs brand B, wholesale overstock vs DTC forward bins, subscription kits you do not want draining pick faces. Each picker only sees their zone. A multi-zone order either waits for a sequential tote (zone A picks, then zone B adds) or gets split into zone-only work. A 3-line order with 2 freezer units and 1 dry unit sits in the freezer until both frozen lines scan. The dry picker is idle. If the freezer picker is filtered to freezer only, they cannot finish the dry line, and the order looks stuck. Switch to all zones, or finish the sequence.
Wave picking for carrier cutoffs
Wave picking is the cutoff tool. Sort the queue by priority, location, and carrier, then release what has to leave by 3pm. Forty Ground orders can wait for the 4pm batch. Twelve 2-Day orders cannot. Waving all 52 at 10am just recreates the singles pile. Do not wave the whole building if most of the volume is singles. Those still want batches.
Pick path follows location sequence
Pick path is mostly location sequence. The system walks locations in sequence order, then name, until the quantity is filled. If the same SKU lives in five bins, 2 + 3 + 4 + 1 + 6, pickers will hit all five. Consolidate the 16 into one forward pick bin and put overstock behind it. You will not get an auto-generated tour from a floor blueprint. You get zones, location types, and sequence numbers.
Do not mix methods on the same cart. Batch the singles. Zone the cold room. Wave the carrier cutoff.
