Avalara × Fulfil

Avalara integration

Enterprise tax automation,
for US and UK.

Fulfil fetches tax rates when orders are created and sends transactions to Avalara when orders ship, not at checkout. Your tax filings match what actually shipped.

FAQ

Questions? Answers.

When does Fulfil calculate tax versus report it to Avalara?
These are two separate steps. Tax is calculated when the order is created: directly by Fulfil for orders you enter manually, or at checkout by Shopify or another platform for e-commerce orders. Fulfil then reports the completed transaction to Avalara when the invoice is posted, which is typically when the order ships, so your filings reflect the final shipped amounts and confirmed addresses.
Can I keep using Avalara on Shopify and still report through Fulfil?
Yes. Shopify can continue calculating tax at checkout while Fulfil sends the shipped transactions to Avalara for filing, and the two work together without conflict. If you want to avoid duplicate records in Avalara, you can disable transaction sending from Shopify while keeping its tax calculation on.
Can I set different tax codes for different products?
Yes. You manage Avalara tax codes at the product category level or the individual product level, and a product-level code overrides its category for items like apparel, food, and supplements. Tax codes are not inherited from parent categories, so each subcategory needs its own code.
Does the Avalara integration handle UK VAT and supplier invoices?
Yes. The integration is certified by Avalara for VAT and carries the official VAT badge. For UK entities you can set the tax rule to cover both sales and purchase transactions, which lets Fulfil send supplier invoices for input tax, and Fulfil adds required VAT messages such as reverse charge and intra-community supply notes to your invoices.
Does Fulfil file my VAT returns?
No. Fulfil sends transaction data to Avalara but does not file your returns. You use the transaction data collected in AvaTax to complete your VAT filing to HMRC separately.
Can I run more than one company through Avalara?
Yes. If your companies share one Avalara account, you need only one integration, with separate tax rules for each company. If a company uses its own Avalara account, you create a separate integration for it, and either way each company's transactions stay segregated.
